FIELD NOTES + INSIDER TIPS
You've spent an epic day shredding the slopes at Timberline Ski Area, and now you're ready to raise a glass to an epic day. If the roads are looking rough — or you’re too impatient to make it to our favorite post-ski party spots — the trusty Y’Bar is a solid option just a snowball’s throw from Timberline Lodge.
This laid back restaurant and bar pairs lodge vibes with the spirit of a sports bar, all nestled on the second floor of the Wy’East Day Lodge. So unstrap those boots, check your gear and head upstairs to share epic stories, good food and cold bevs.
The Place To Be Post Ski
Y'Bar tends to get packed as the day winds down, but that’s what après-ski is all about. If you're after a primo spot by the indoor fireplace, consider wrapping up your ski day at least an hour early. You'll thank us when you're sipping your hot toddy in front of the crackling fire. If you’re not picky, no worries. We’ve never had trouble finding table for our party of four, and they even welcome skiers and boarders in full gear.
Soon, you’ll see Y'Bar is the real deal. A motley crew of skiers and snowboarders tromp in to revel in the glory of a day on the mountain, and the bartenders will share high fives right along with ‘em. In the summer, the winter must is replaced with dust as mountain bikers roll in to celebrate a day of single track intensity.
But the secret sauce at Y’Bar is that it’s also family-friendly. So, whether you're skiing with the fam or kicking back with your buddies, Y'Bar will fit the bill.
A Menu With Comfort and A Mountainous Reputation
The kitchen serves up a crowd-pleasing Tex-Mex centric menu, done up alpine style. Think nachos piled high, hearty chili (with a bread bowl option), succulent street tacos, and solid sandwiches that hit the spot. Like any slope-side spot, prices run a bit steep, but are far better than what you find at the Vails and Aspens of the ski world.
One of our go-to dishes is the mountainous nachos. As the name implies, it’s enough to satisfy an entire ski squad. Towering tri-color tortilla chips get covered in three-bean chili, nacho cheese, pico de gallo, Tillamook cheddar cheese, sour cream, pickled jalapenos, and cilantro. It’s a sight to behold and a massive heap of top-nach flavor (see what we did there?).
For those seeking something more "human-sized," the Mole Chicken Tostada is also on point. They braise the chicken in this iconic savory sauce until it pulls apart with a fork. Then it’s nestled atop a simple salad, black bean puree and crispy corn tortillas. A scoop of pico de gallo tops it all off, and they add a side of rice and beans just to make sure you can replenish all the calories you burned off on the hill.
Kids are VIPs at Y'Bar too, with a menu featuring all the faves – mac and cheese, chicken strips, and even a trusty PB&J sandwich. Whining averted, and if they can’t find something they like, keep reading for the secret weapon.
Après Cocktails, Brews and Views
The bartenders at Y'Bar are friendly as hell. We already said this in our review of Timberline Ski Area, but it can’t be overstated. They are almost as fast as those bombers you see on the slopes too. Their menu of concoctions is pretty stellar too. Don’t overlook the Bruno’s Brownie, an Oregon homage featuring Crater Lake Hazelnut Vodka, Portland-based K&F coffee, Bailey's Irish Cream, and whipped cream goodness. If the kids get jealous, the infamous Snowcap Dream Hot Chocolate is available almost everywhere the Timberline serves drinks. Win-win!
The taps at Y'Bar pour all the goodness from Mount Hood Brewing Company. You can even score a generous 22-ounce pour for a buck more. Our top picks are the Ice Axe IPA — the perfect companion for those heaping nachos — and the Multorporter Smoked Porter is a match made in heaven with a steaming bowl of their 3 Bean Chili. They also offer about a dozen Northwest wines to satisfy every taste.
To cap it all off, Y'Bar sits atop the mountain, offering sweeping, southern views of the Cascades, including majestic Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters.
A Panoramic Perch
The large glass doors open up to an outdoor sun deck, perfect for dining or simply kicking back and soaking in the mountaintop culture.
On a clear day – or rather, a day without gale force winds or rain – the sun deck is the place to be. Take in spectacular mountain views and immerse yourself in the alpine vibes. You’re at Mount Hood, and this is one of the most comfortable outcroppings to experience its majesty.
One last pro tip: On those perfect evenings, Y'Bar lights up the outdoor deck fireplace. It's cozy; it's picturesque; it's the ideal perch for watching people. Or, even better, witnessing a stunning sunset if the stars align.
So, whether you're celebrating a day on the mountain with friends or capping off a family skiing adventure, Y'Bar is where the fun flows as easily as the hot toddies. So, extend the mountain magic and seek out some classic munchies to end your day right.
